Welcome to the website of artist Anne Barron
Painting animals with a passion ....
You can send me your photographs of any subject and I will turn it into a beautiful portrait in
whatever medium you prefer - pencil, pastel, watercolour, acrylic or oil. Although I specialise in
paintings and drawings of animals, I can also paint people, boats, houses ... just about anything! I
have hundreds of satisfied customers from over 15 years working as a professional artist and I
have also enjoyed painting book illustrations, cartoons and caricatures.
You can see samples of my work on the various gallery pages and if you would like to send me a
portrait commission, please email me your photographs with as much information you can give me
and I'll be in touch.

Having worked most of my life as a senior secretary in various commercial and public sector positions,
it was through pressure of painting commissions that I became a full-time artist in 1996 and that was when I
really learned to paint. I have always had a natural ability to draw and to copy accurately, but at that time I
joined an art class in Sheffield, having just moved there from Leeds. From there I met artists who belonged to
a local art group, where I really began to learn the craft of painting. I did undertake a short course in
watercolour painting with a very good local watercolour artist, whose encouragement got me over the "fear" of
painting, and from then on I have continued to develop my own style of painting and my discovery of different
painting media. I had been undertaking portrait commissions in pencil for many years and pencils always
have been and always will be my first love but they led quite naturally to a love of pastels with slightly less
control but a very exciting way of applying colour directly. A friend had discovered velour pastel paper which
gives me a superb finish for animal paintings such as the one of Robinson's' horses (above), but I also
achieve great results from painting in watercolours, acrylics and oils, all of which have their own qualities.
My partner and I moved to Shetland in 2007, something we'd been considering for a number of years since
my first visit, and we couldn't be happier with our change of circumstance. We now live in a beautiful part of
the world where we have our dream cottage by the sea and I can paint in my conservatory with a view of the
Atlantic as well as a valley full of seabirds, sheep and Shetland ponies. It was, therefore, a great honour to be
commissioned recently to paint the prizes for the Shetland Pony Breeders Society Show held in Shetland on
22/23rd August for the first time in 10 years. The show itself was a great success and I was delighted that my
paintings were very well received by visitors, the Society and the winners as well, and have already gone out
to all parts of the UK, Denmark, Finland, Holland and even Australia. The limited edition run of giclee prints
of these images is now available to order from the website and the images and ordering procedure are on
the domestic animals page.
Portraits are available with just a few weeks’ lead time. For further details of prices and requirements,
please see the ordering page.
My aim in finishing a portrait is to create a likeness and then go on to breathe life into the painting. This is
done by combining a talent for copying accurately from photographs whilst at the same time adding an
element that no camera can capture - passion for the subject and a love for the process of interpreting what I
can see onto the paper or canvas. My experience of studying animals (particularly my own cats and dogs)
shows in my work according to the people who come back to me time after time for repeat commissions.
Thanks for viewing my site and don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries.

David Shepherd Foundation (helping wildlife all over the world), The Marine Conservation Society, The Cat's
Protection, The Dog's Trust or a suitable local animal or international wildlife charity - you can state a
preference when you make a purchase and I will try to send my donation to your preferred charity.
